Enhancing your home with an orangery

If you are looking for an aesthetically pleasing way to add more space to your home, you may wish to consider an orangery. These are of exceptional quality and add light, space and value to your home. As the months start getting warmer and we move towards summer, an extension like an orangery can be warm and cosy, letting in a lot of sunshine to your home. We’ve put together a guide on what an orangery is and the benefits one can have on your home.

What is an orangery?

A traditional orangery is somewhere between an extension and a conservatory. Orangeries are usually brick built with a flat perimeter roof. Orangeries are often easily recognised by their large tall windows and a flat roof with a glass lantern. They usually stand alone as a separate entity to the house or they are built directly against the home with their own windows and doors. At Benchmark Windows, our bespoke orangery designs are available in Timber, Aluminium, and PVC-U, easily blending in with the style of your home. Learn more about our bespoke orangeries here.

Why should I consider an orangery?

A bespoke orangery style conservatory immediately gives you more living space. To get more living space in your home, people often consider moving house, loft extensions or one or two-story extensions. An orangery is a simple way to gain that extra space whilst increasing the value of your property. Orangeries are appealing to potential buyers not only because of the extra space but also because of how visually attractive they can be when constructed to a high standard.

You can use your orangery for different purposes. If you’d like it to be a dining area for guests, a working office space or a play area for younger guests, all of this is possible with an orangery.

The benefits of an orangery during the summer months

If you’re thinking of enhancing your home with an orangery, now is the time to do it. Increasing the amount of natural light into your home and allowing it to access your property easily can improve your mood and create a calm atmosphere to relax in. Even during those rainier summer days, orangeries can be very relaxing and cosy.

With a lot of us working from home, an orangery can be a beautiful space to work in. It’s easy to work in one room all day, barely seeing the sunlight, but with an orangery you’ll have front row seats to the summer sunshine.

As it has easy access to your garden, an orangery is a wonderful place to host summer social gatherings with friends and family. Enjoy some drinks in the sunshine with your friends and then later head into your conservatory when things start to get a bit chilly outside. With an orangery, people will be able to come and go from your garden to your home as they please.

Do you need planning permission for an orangery?

Planning permission can be a tricky thing to understand and can get quite confusing. It’s not usually required for an orangery. Most orangeries are classed as ‘permitted development’, which means most homeowners do not need to ask for permission. Permitted development requires that the orangery must not exceed 50% of the area of the house and should not include any balconies, decks or verandas.
